How to Cut Fat From Your Diet

Cutting the fat from your diet can have significant positive impacts on your health such as weight loss, decreasing blood pressure, decreasing cholesterol and ameliorating some symptoms of diabetes. Eating too much fat in your diet can lead to an increased risk of heart attacks and even some types of cancer. Certain types of fats are more important to cut from the diet than other types of fats. In order to cut fat from your diet you'll need to start eating some new foods and start planning meals regularly in order to fall into the same fast-food trap over and over. A low-fat diet includes lots of fresh foods and very little fast foods.

Step 1

Purchase fresh fruits and vegetables. In order to cut the fat from your diet, stock up on plenty of replacement foods which are healthy. Almost every fruit and vegetable contains no fat whatsoever. The more fruits and vegetables you eat, the less room you will have in your diet for fattening foods. Eat at least five or more servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Add fruit to your breakfast every morning. Use fresh salsa instead of dressing on salads, and make sure to have some fresh vegetables with every dinner.

Step 2

Change to a different type of meat in your meals. If you are used to eating steak, pork or dark-meat chicken, switch to lower-fat meats which have just as much protein and can be just as filling. White fish such as tilapia and orange roughy are very low in fat and calories. Choose skinless versions of chicken and turkey. The skin is full of fat.

Step 3

Eat meatless meals at least two or three times per week. You don't have to switch to a completely vegetarian diet, but it is a very good idea to have at least a few meat-free meals or meat free days per week. Instead of a dinner using meat as the protein, substitute meat for beans or lentils. Soy meats and tofu are also substitutes for meat that are filling, low fat and full of protein.

Step 4

Switch to low-fat dairy products. Switching to 2 percent, 1 percent or skim milk will help you to significantly trim the fat from your diet. Low-fat cheese made with 2 percent milk or even 1 percent milk are good replacements for regular cheese. You can even buy low-fat cream cheese and cottage cheese. Switching to all low-fat dairy products is a small change that can make a big impact on your health over time.
